When the temperatures soar, it can be hard to keep your cool about your hair. Those with curly tresses are apt to experience frizz thanks to the spike in humidity, while people with straight hair may find their hair falling even flatter. Everyone’s scalp will get oilier and greasier—and ends are sure to fray no matter your tress type. How to handle all of these strand saboteurs? Ricardo Dinis, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Cutting, offers you pointers for summer-proofing your strands:

To combat frizz: “The trick is to style your hair with products that block out moisture from the atmosphere, which can exacerbate frizz,” says Ricardo. Some good options include Smooth Infusion™ Shampoo, Conditioner, and Style-Prep Smoother.

To keep hair from falling flat: “Be sure to use lightweight cleansers and stylers that keep the oil and grease off your scalp so it can’t weigh down your strands,” says Ricardo. Try our Pure Abundance™ Shampoo, Volumizing Clay Conditioner, and Style-Prep.

To keep hair healthy: “Get regular trims as you would throughout the rest of the year—but if you’re heat-styling, you’ll definitely want to increase your use of masks and deep conditioners,” says Ricardo. Two to try: Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque and Dry Remedy™ Moisturizing Masque.

To keep hair resilient: Consider heat styling less frequently so as to avoid excess wear and tear on your tresses. To appear polished on days you air-dry your hair, Ricardo suggests sporting the wet look by working gel or mousse (like Phomollient™ Styling Foam) through damp hair, from the nape to the hairline (it should be lightest in front, where you have the least hair). Then side-part your strands and let the sun do the rest!
